About the mailing list

HISC has set up a mailing list that we want to use to help keep members informed of events and other developments. It will not be a particularly busy list. Only members of HISC will be allowed to join and it will be moderated so that inappropriate messages are not distributed.

How to join the list

If you would like to join this mailing list send a blank mail message to the following address :
[ HISCnews-subscribe@yahoogroups.com ]

Mailing list delivery options

Our list is set up with Yahoo! which offers three separate delivery options: individual emails, daily digests and web only.

People who select the Individual Email option will receive a copy of each message posted to the group. For instance, if there are 20 posts made to the group, Yahoo! Groups will send 20 individual messages to your email address. Yahoo! Groups immediately dispatches posts to individuals who have selected this option. It will ensure the timeliest delivery of messages.

Members who select the Daily Digest option will not receive individual messages. Yahoo! Groups will condense the messages into a digest. Digests contain up to 25 messages and are delivered based upon 24-hour periods: 12 a.m. to 12 a.m. If a group receives more than 25 posts a day, you may receive more than one digest in the 24-hour period. For instance, if 35 messages are posted to a group in a day, members who have chosen this option will receive one digest of 25 messages and a second digest of the remaining 10 messages.

Members may also opt to receive no messages from a group. The Web Only/No Mail option allows members access to the group's posts solely via the Yahoo! Groups site. Members who have elected this option will need to visit the group's 'Messages' page in order to review the posts made to the group. This option is wonderful for members who are on vacation. They can elect this option before leaving, avoiding a full Inbox upon return or creating an email loop caused by an email client's vacation setting.

These options are not universal. Members may subscribe to multiple groups and elect specific settings based upon their needs from each group and the group's traffic. A group's 'Main Page', which offers a report of the number of posts for each month of the group's existence, is a valuable resource when determining your delivery setting for the group. Members may choose the Daily Digest or Web Only options for groups with heavy traffic patterns, to avoid Inbox clutter. As mentioned above, the Individual Email option is suggested for groups from which a member would like to receive posts as quickly as possible.

Changing your settings

This section details how to alter the default settings for your membership of the HISC mailing list.

Using e-mail

You may modify your delivery setting for any group via email or the web.

Yahoo! Groups offer three email commands for changing your delivery setting for a group. Sending a blank message to the following addresses will alter your delivery settings for the group specified.

HISCnews-normal@yahoogroups.com
changes your delivery setting to Individual Emails.

HISCnews-digest@yahoogroups.com
changes your delivery setting to Daily Digest. Daily Digests can only be sent out in the Plain Text format. If a message within a Daily Digest contains attachments, then you will have to view this attachment via the group archives.

HISCnews-nomail@yahoogroups.com
changes your delivery setting to Web Only.

Using a Web browser
